PMOMS Immersion Experience

“9+ Months: A Journey in Birth, Loss, Recovery, and Joy of Black Motherhood”

August 17 – 24, 2022

The PMOMS team and community partners (listed below) delivered an immersive artist experience to uplift the transformative power of community arts, celebrate local artists, and increase awareness of Black maternal health experiences in the city of Pittsburgh.

We hosted this exhibit at The Corner (200 Robinson Street) in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. In addition to visual art hung on the walls, we also curated sound and video to enhance the visitor experience.

The exhibit featured two interactive pieces. The garden of collective care consisted of different types of flowers and springs, placed by visitors, to represent personal stories around birth and loss. From the opening event on Wednesday, August 17th, we watched this garden grow.

Visitors could also contribute to a collaborative arrangement by choosing flowers to place on the Ikebana vase.

Every day of the exhibit, members of the PMOMS team and our community partners were present in the gallery to engage with visitors and talk about the importance of centering Black mothers and birthing people in our efforts to eliminate racial disparities in reproductive health.
